NATIONAL SAFETY AWARD

Sponsor: Nestlife

Awarded to: Edison Power Gauteng

Contract: Time Square Casino

Client: Sun International

Main contractor: WBHO Construction

Location: Menlyn Maine, Pretoria

Project duration: 18 months (August 2015 to March 2017)

Total value of contract: R94-million

Edison Power Gauteng was on site at the Time Square Menlyn Maine Casino from November 2015 until April 2017 as the designated Electrical Contractor responsible for all permanent electrical installations for the Casino. The company is a well-recognised electrical contractor with a reputation for exceptional safety management on projects.

The safety crew on the site consisted of one Senior Site Manager; three Site Managers; four Supervisors; eight Team Leaders; one Safety Officer; one Candidate Safety Officer; and six Safety Representatives.

Safety at the Time Square Menlyn Maine Casino project was managed well, not because of any one individual’s performance, but because every person on site was committed to driving the safety culture forward. ‘I am my brother’s keeper’ was instilled as the motto for every worker to adopt with the understanding that they all should look out for each other.

Every issue that was brought to our attention by WBHO, the main contractor, was addressed immediately to avoid incidents or injuries occurring under our watch.

Onsite training

The Safety Officer was assisted in drafting his portfolio for submission to the South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP). He was taken from the level of Safety Representative and assisted to the level where he is now qualified and registered, which is a requirement in the Construction Regulations section 8.6.

The Candidate Safety Officer was also assisted in drafting his portfolio for submission to the SACPCMP. He was also taken from the level of Safety Representative and assisted to the level where he is now registered through SACPCMP.

All Site Managers and Supervisors were trained on Legal Liability for the project and workers received training by Datamatrix for Working at Height, Scaffold Erector and Scaffold Inspector.

Audit results

Edison Power Gauteng achieved an above average audit result every month – between 90 and 100%.

At any time, there were eight first-aiders on the project who were equipped with four first aid boxes. For the duration of the contract, Edison Power Gauteng only conceded four medical conditions and eight first aid cases, all of which were minor.

Incidents

In the construction industry, inadequate safety controls affect productivity and consequently reduce profit. All the workers on site – from site managers and supervisors to team leaders and general workers – proved that a commitment to safety helps the production department to achieve the highest possible safety compliance results.

Limiting incidents contributed significantly to a profitable project with 549 491.45 hours on site. This is achievable if everyone on site works together and uses safety as a tool to deliver great workmanship, quality products, safe compliance, the meeting of client deadlines and, ultimately, to keep all workers safe from hazards and risks.
