PORT ELIZABETH HOST EMPLOYERS “IMPRESSED” WITH DSPP PROJECT APPRENTICES

Lucas Bowles, ECA(SA) Regional Director (East/South Cape) says the 19 host employers in Port Elizabeth who are providing on-the-job training for 50 Dual System Pilot Project apprentices are “very impressed” with the quality of the intake.

“The host employers all responded positively and were very impressed with the quality of the apprentices as well as their attitude towards making a success of their training.”

Lucas explains that the Dual System Pilot Project (DSPP) is funded by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and the National Skills Fund, in partnership with Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit Gmbh (GIZ).

“The ECA(SA) is the lead employer on this project, and oversees the placement of learners with host employers.”

He says that some of the apprentices travel long distances to get to their workplaces, but they are grateful for the opportunity to gain this valuable on-the-job training in their chosen trade.

Innovative

The DSPP is an innovative training project aimed at developing competent and confident electricians and plumbers in South Africa. A hands-on and integrated learning approach based on the real world of work is implemented: Simulated practical learning and related theory at four public TVET college sites are combined with workplace-based training at industry through a structured, regular rotation.

The three-year programme is carried out in line with the new Quality Council for Trades and Occupations’ (QCTO) curriculum and training schedule and will conclude with the A21 trade test.

Committed

The DSPP project emphasises real-life work experience, not only imparting know-how, but also nurturing the values, ethos and pride of a true artisan.

“The host employers are committed to assisting the apprentices to gain that valuable workplace experience,” says Lucas.

The apprentices were all issued with overalls and a toolbox of basic tools when they started their workplace training and receive a monthly stipend. They’ll complete their first company block on 27 July.
