GIEL LABUSCHAGNE ELECTED AS ECA(SA)’S NEW PRESIDENT: WORKING TOWARDS A BETTER ECA(SA) FOR ALL

Giel Labuschagne was elected as the ECA(SA)’s President at the AGM held on 24 November and takes over the reins from Johnny Cunniff, who served as President for two years.

Giel has been a valuable member of the ECA(SA) for more than 25 years and has actively served on several committees – Remunerations Committee (RemCom); Finance Committee; Regional Technical Committee; National Technical Committee and National Executive Committee.

Giel has been in the electrical industry his entire working life, starting out in the Free State where he obtained his Wireman’s Licence. He worked as Senior Engineering Assistant with Eskom in Welkom for a number of years before moving to Johannesburg in 1990 where he was Head of Technical Services (Principal Technician) at Eskom’s Rivonia office.

He left Eskom in 1997 and started his own electrical contracting business, which he still runs today offering services in commercial and industrial electrical maintenance.

Giel has a thorough knowledge of the electrical industry in South Africa and, as a self-employed electrical contractor and an ECA(SA) member, he understands the daily frustrations of electrical contractors and is committed to working towards “a better ECA(SA) for all”.

“There are many challenges ahead for me – and the electrical industry – and I’m looking forward to working with Mark Mfikoe, Stephen Khola, Tembe Mwemba as well as all the regional directors. We’re a team and we’re all working towards a common goal,” he says, adding that he’d like to “achieve as much as possible” while he’s President of the ECA(SA).
