CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT GEORGE BRANCH

By Wayne Hodgson, Geroge Branch Chairman

Firstly, I would like to thank all the members, contractors, and the Regional Director of the ECA for the privilege of being able to serve the East/South Cape electrical industry.

I have noticed a vast incensement in Electrical Contractors coming into our area, making it tougher for long standing compliant electrical contractors to secure work.

Compliance

There are still numerous contractors who do not fully comply with the NBECI Agreement and conform to the SANS 10142-3 Wiring Code. There have been Two cases in 2025 that the ECA had to deal with and fortunately, we could resolve between the Contractor and the Client.

Sponsors

A word of thanks to our sponsors who provide their services, expertise, and the eats that we enjoy after the meetings.

Workshops/Courses/Seminars

June 2025-days of the 08-07 we had our Estimating & Tendering Course held at the ECA Offices with 9 x Registered attendees and only 6 attended.

A COC Refresher Course was held on the 18th of September 2025, PRESENTED BY JOHNNY CUNNIFF.

We would like to see some of the following presentations take place in 2026, but this can only happen if we support these workshops by attending and/or sending designated employees.

• Fire Risk: Thatch roofs present an increased fire hazard, especially from lightning strikes or electrical faults.

• Alternative Supplies – Solar, Generators, UPS.

• SANS 10142-1 & 3 Wiring Regulations.

• COC – Filling in of document, understanding the document, understanding the readings and what it means.

• OHASA – The implications of not complying.

• HR in our company – How we engage with our employees.

• Tendering & Estimating Course

It’s been affected too electrical contractors.

I think that we have been very fortunate to have had several courses and technical meetings. The presentation on various new products has been informative and interesting and has provided valuable insight for the contractor in selecting certain products.

A word of thanks to all who, from time to time, helps and advises members on contracting and labour issues.

We welcomed Fiona Knell to the ECA(SA) and of course dropping her into the deep end in February 2025.
