The R3 reduction in the fuel levy is too little to bring comfort to the distressed consumer. Business is battling to stay afloat, and we need customers to afford our services. When we succeed, we generate income and pay taxes. These taxes are enough and must be used efficiently and correctly, and not sponsor corruption and make uncomfortable headlines.
We are informed that almost 50% of the Fuel Price is Levies and Taxes. These must be cut by 50% in the same way that the caring governments elsewhere in the world have done. Namibia has reduced the fuel levies by 50%. Why don’t we do the same? It is not acceptable that people from Botswana and Eswatini buy Fuel from South Africa and yet are able to sell it cheaper in their countries compared to us.
We are victims of Taxes and Levies, and these are strangling us to no end. The government makes enough money from businesses by taxing our business income. The stranglehold brought about by fuel levies and taxes is too much of a burden. Now we must be victims of price fluctuations inspired by faraway battles we have nothing to do with. It is unfair to the citizens of this country that we simply create expenses and pass them on to consumers.
The ECA(SA) calls on the government to reduce fuel levies by an amount that would make a difference. Paying almost R30 for a Liter of diesel is incredibly unfair.
