The Electrical Contractors’ Association of South Africa (ECA(SA)) Free State Region recently hosted a series of Networking Walkarounds across Bloemfontein, Welkom, Kimberley, Upington, and Kuruman. These events formed part of an ongoing initiative to strengthen industry collaboration, promote member value, and enhance the visibility of both ECA (SA) and its trusted supplier network.
The primary objective of the walkarounds was to create a platform where electricians, suppliers, and industry stakeholders could engage directly, share knowledge, and build meaningful business relationships. A key focus was also to raise awareness of ECA(SA) among non-member electricians, with the aim of encouraging greater participation and membership growth.
Attendance across the events was overwhelmingly made up of ECA(SA) members, with approximately 92% of participants already affiliated with the Association. The Bloemfontein event, held on 4 June, attracted 53 attendees, followed by Welkom on 11 June with 34 attendees, and Kimberley on 18 June with 31 attendees. While participation from non-members remains limited, the sessions continue to provide an effective platform to demonstrate the value and benefits of ECA(SA) membership.
The events were well supported by wholesalers and direct suppliers, who showcased a wide range of electrical products and solutions, including lighting, cabling, glands, solar panels, inverters, distribution boards, and routing equipment. Bloemfontein hosted 10 sponsors represented by 18 delegates, while Welkom featured 7 sponsors with 11 representatives, and Kimberley included 5 sponsors represented by 9 delegates.
Notable highlights included strong interest in the durability and quality of products from suppliers such as CCG and Radiant Lighting. In addition, suppliers including Afrison, ARB, and Radiant Lighting contributed to the success of the events by providing prizes, which were well received by attendees.
Adding further value, Gateway Claims (a South African consultancy based in Bloemfontein) delivered informative presentations at each session, focusing on COIDA registration procedures, injury-on-duty (IOD) claims, and support services available to contractors. These presentations were particularly well received, underscoring the importance of compliance and administrative support within the industry.
Feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive, with members highlighting the informative nature of industry updates, the visibility of training opportunities, and the value of networking with both fellow contractors and suppliers. The walkarounds have proven to be effective platforms for knowledge-sharing and fostering new business relationships.
Regional engagement continues to vary across locations, with Bloemfontein and Upington recording the strongest attendance, followed by Welkom. Kimberley has shown encouraging growth in recent meetings, while Kuruman remains a smaller but developing area, with external industry events occasionally impacting participation.
Looking ahead, the Free State Region has confirmed that the next round of engagements will take place in October 2026, where each branch will host an Open Day. These events will also incorporate Annual General Meetings (AGMs), providing ECA(SA) members with the opportunity to elect new Branch Executive Committees while continuing to engage with industry partners.
Beyond networking, the region remains committed to broader industry development initiatives. A collaborative effort between ECA(SA) and the NBCEI is currently underway to address non-compliant contractors through on-site visits, combining regulatory enforcement with guidance on training and registration pathways to achieve compliance. In addition, the region recently engaged with stakeholders in Orania regarding the development of a new electrical training facility, further supporting skills development and strengthening industry collaboration.
The ECA(SA) Free State Region extends its sincere appreciation to all members, suppliers, and partners who contributed to the success of the Networking Walkarounds. Through initiatives such as these, the Association continues to foster collaboration, promote compliance, and drive sustainable growth within the electrical contracting industry.
