HOW LONG IS AN ELECTRICAL CERTIFICATE OF COMPLIANCE VALID FOR?

It has been brought to the ECA’s notice that some electrical contractors imply that a CoC has a validity period of two years and suggest that property owners should renew their electrical CoCs bi-annually. This is not true. So, how long is an electrical Certificate of Compliance (CoC) valid for? The Electrical Installation Regulations state that a Certificate of Compliance is valid for two years for purposes of transfer and the user or lessor may not allow a change of ownership if the certificate of compliance is older than two years. A CoC is valid for the lifetime of an installation unless alterations have been done, in which case, a supplementary CoC must be issued.

All CoCs must be kept in a safe place as, in the event of a claim, an insurance company may ask to see a valid CoC for the insured property.

Remember that only a Registered Person may legally issue a CoC and you should always verify the contractor’s registration with the Department of Employment and Labour. If your electrical contractor is a member of the ECA, you can verify their registration with your nearest ECA branch.
