BEKA Schréder has supplied the retrofit solar lighting solution at a busy pedestrian crossing at Century City in Cape Town, South Africa.
Century City is a 250ha precinct which includes over 670 hotel beds, the Century City Conference Centre, a Curro Junior and Senior School, two Educare centres, Oasis Luxury Retirement Resort and Oasis Care Centre. Furthermore, there is more than 470 000m² of commercial space and 212 000m² of retail space, resulting in more than 700 businesses who employ thousands. Century City has 21-million visitors a year. More than 4 000 homes have already been completed and an estimated 65,000 people now live or work at Century City, embracing its people-centered principle of new urbanism by creating a live, work and play environment all in one city. Beautiful outdoor spaces can also be enjoyed, such as the award-winning, 16ha nature reserve Intaka Island, at the heart of Century City. (Source: https://centurycity.co.za/)
The Century City Property Owners’ Association (CCPOA), functioning as a mini-municipality, is responsible for the management of the entire Century City Precinct. All property owners at Century City automatically become members of the CCPOA.
The visibility of pedestrian crossings became problematic during power supply interruptions, specifically the very busy intersection located at a MyCiTi Bus Stop and the Public Transport Interchange (PTI). This called for a solar lighting solution!
Since BEKA Schréder’s decorative Albany GEN2 luminaires are installed all around Century City, the CCPOA did not want to lose the look and feel. Therefore, the lighting at the intersection was replaced with a vertical solar solution and new ALBANY GEN2 luminaires. Now there is lighting even when there are power supply interruptions, making pedestrians feel safe crossing the road at night.
BEKA Schréder develops and manufactures energy-efficient LED lighting products in South Africa, designed and suitable for local conditions.
We are very proud to be associated with Century City Property Owners’ Association in providing a successful lighting solution for this project.
