INDUSTRY THINK TANK: EARTHING BEST PRACTICES FOR ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SYSTEMS: Safety, Performance & Compliance Workshop

The Electrical Contractors Association of South Africa (ECA(SA)) is hosting a specialized Think Tank session focused on earthing practices for alternative energy supplies – a critical yet often overlooked aspect of modern electrical installations.

As solar PV, wind energy, and backup generation systems continue to proliferate, proper earthing techniques have become increasingly important. Incorrect grounding methods, particularly in inverter-based systems, can create serious safety hazards, compromise system performance, and result in non-compliance with mandatory standards.

Key Focus Areas

  • Safety and reliability through proper earthing techniques
  • SANS 10142-1 compliance requirements
  • Earthing system types and design considerations
  • Integration challenges with existing grid infrastructure
  • Solutions for off-grid and hybrid system configurations

Discussion Topics

  • National and international standards compliance
  • Inverter-based system grounding methodologies
  • Earth fault loop impedance and system protection
  • Surge protection strategies and lightning mitigation
  • System design balancing safety and optimal performance

Outcomes from this session will inform the development of national guidance documentation and recommendations to the ECA(SA) National Technical Committee for standards review and gap analysis.

Industry Experts Wanted: We welcome presentations from electrical engineers, renewable installation contractors, safety inspectors, and renewable energy consultants who can share valuable insights and experiences.
